My kids fought over who got to hold it during our camping trip, and it actually worked better than I expected for teaching them how the sun moves. The needle-shadow trick is simple enough that my 7-year-old figured it out after one try, and it's small enough to live in a coat pocket.

My kid was so fascinated watching the shadow move across the numbers on this sundial—it finally made the concept of solar time click for them. The fact that you just point the needle north and read the shadow is so simple but brilliant. Perfect little tool for outdoor adventures.

The instructions for aligning the needle are clear enough for my 8-year-old to follow on his own. It's a clever little gadget that got him outside figuring out shadows, though I wish the markings were a bit easier to read in low light.
